- 3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- kosher salt, to taste
- freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 (8-ounce) carton baby bella mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, plus more, whole sprigs, to taste, for garnish
Directions
Step 1 -In a large bowl, add the beef, the egg, the breadcrumbs, the garlic powder, the onion powder, the paprika, the salt, and the pepper and stir gently to combine.
Step 2 -Divide the beef mixture into 4 portions and then flatten each into a 1/2-inch-thick oval patty.
Step 3 -In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil.
Step 4 -Add the patties to the hot oil and cook until browned and the meat reaches an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees F, about 6-8 minutes per side.
Step 5 -Transfer the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
Step 6 -In the same pan, melt the butter.
Step 7 -Add the mushrooms and the onions to the melted butter and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Step 8 -Add the flour to the vegetable mixture and cook, while tossing to coat, until the raw flour smell disappears, about 1 minute.
Step 9 -Gradually add the broth to the vegetable mixture, while whisking.
Step 10 -Add the Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon of the thyme to the sauce mixture and stir to combine.
Step 11 -Bring the sauce to a boil.
Step 12 -Reduce the heat to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken, about 5 minutes.
Step 13 -Taste the sauce and season it with the salt and the pepper, as needed.
Step 14 -Transfer the patties to the skillet and spoon the sauce over the top of them.
Step 15 -Allow the patties to warm through, about 2-3 minutes.
Step 16 -Serve garnished with the extra thyme sprigs.
