Ingredients
- For the French toast:
- 1 loaf French bread, sliced
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup milk or half-and-half
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored, thinly sliced
- For the streusel:
- 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, cold and cubed
Directions
Step 1 -Coat a 9x13-inch nonstick baking pan with cooking spray.
Step 2 -Lay the bread slices in the bottom of the pan in a single layer, stacking and pressing down, as needed, but leaving a little room for the apples.
Step 3 -In a bowl, add the eggs, the milk, 1/4 cup of the brown sugar, the vanilla, the cinnamon, and the salt and whisk to combine.
Step 4 -Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring to coat the bread evenly.
Step 5 -Cover the baking pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 1 hour and up to overnight.
Step 6 -In a bowl, add the oats, the flour, and the remaining brown sugar, then cut the butter in with a pastry cutter or a fork until crumbly.
Step 7 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 8 -Spread the apple slices over the bread layer.
Step 9 -Top the bread-apple layer with the oat streusel.
Step 10 -Bake until the bread is set, the apples are tender, and the streusel is golden, about 1 hour; cover with foil if it is browning too quickly.
Step 11 -Serve.
