Ingredients
- 1 pound frozen bread dough or 1 pound prepared pizza dough
- flour, for dusting
- 1/4 pound pepperoni, sliced
- 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, freshly shredded
- 1/4 pound capicola, sliced
- 1 1/2 teaspoons pizza seasoning, divided
- salt, to taste
- pepper, to taste
- 1 egg plus 1 tablespoon water mixed into an egg wash, optional
- marinara sauce, optional, for dipping
Directions
Step 1 -Grease a large baking sheet. Place the dough on the prepared baking sheet and cover it with plastic wrap. Let the dough defrost in the fridge for at least 6-8 hours and up to overnight.
Step 2 -Remove from the fridge and let the dough sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour before assembling. Using prepared pizza dough should allow you to skip the defrosting steps.
Step 3 -Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 4 -Lightly dust a large work surface and a rolling pin with flour.
Step 5 -Roll the dough out into an 8x13-inch rectangle.
Step 6 -Layer the pepperoni on top of the dough rectangle. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the cheese. Layer the capicola on top. Sprinkle on the remaining cheese. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon pizza seasoning. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
Step 7 -Tightly roll up the rectangle, jelly-roll style. Tuck the ends over and pinch the seams closed.
Step 8 -Respray the baking sheet with non-stick spray.
Step 9 -Transfer the Stromboli to the pan.
Step 10 -Brush the Stromboli with the egg wash, paying extra attention to the seal to help it close.
Step 11 -Sprinkle the remaining pizza seasoning on top.
Step 12 -Bake until golden brown and crispy, about 20 minutes.
Step 13 -Let rest for 1-2 minutes.
Step 14 -Slice and serve with marinara.
